What is Bursitis?
Bursitis occurs when the bursa sac is inflammed. There are bursa sacs in many areas throughout the body, which are used to decrease friction and rubbing between bones, muscles, and tendons. When the bursa sac is irritated, one can experience severe pain and immobility.
Bursitis is often caused by repetitive trauma or a major more serious injury. This means that one can develop bursitis just through over use or through a serious injury. Incorrect posture, poor stretching, or stressful exercise can all lead to bursitis.
Bursitis may affect these areas:
- Elbow Bursitis
- Shoulder Bursitis
- Hip
- Knee
- Achilles Tendon
The most common symptom of bursitis is pain and can end up severe if not treated properly. The way to treat bursitis is through rest, icing, avoiding activities that create stress in the area of the bursitis, and taking over-the-counter inflammatory medications. Another way to treat Bursitis is through Physical Therapy.
Physical Therapy For Bursitis:
Physical therapists are professionals, educated and trained, to help alleviate the condition of bursitis. Physical therapy at first must remain conservative in order not to further aggravate the condition. This will include reducing the inflammation and increasing blood circulation for healing.
As the initial inflammation comes down and one is experiencing less bursitis pain, a series of light stretching and strengthening will be initiated to restore full motion and improve strength to reduce stress on the tendons and joint. The end result is not only the end of the bursitis condition but also less of a likelihood the condition will return in that area due to the physical therapy program.
